This past Saturday surprised me. I wasn't really looking forward to going to a "tea party" for my sister-in-law's birthday. I'm not a big fan of typical "girly" activities, or of bonding with other females in general. The thing that excited me the most about this little outing was going with my almost 10-year old daughter, Morgan.
We went to Two Leaves and a Bud, a quaint little eatery in downtown Concord, NC. The food was surprisingly good. I had a sandwich called The Clucker - seasoned chicken breast with melted cheddar, onions and mushrooms - and instead of the kaiser roll, I opted for toasted rye. Delicious. I sucked down about 4 glasses of their sweet house tea, Front Porch. Morgan enjoyed some tuna salad (her favorite), and we shared dessert, a truly delicious slice of chocolate mousse cake. We all had a nice time together!
Now thoroughly caffeinated, I promised Morgan a trip to the local Goodwill for a little thrift shopping. We had a BLAST. See, I'm bent on learning to sew. Sure, I can hand-sew some, basic hems, and buttons, and small projects; but I really want to learn how to SEW - I'm talking clothing, quilts, anything and everything. I'm not exactly sure why. Part of it is about rediscovering what I think is becoming a "lost art" and another part is about being able to make what I want, out of what I want, instead of paying a fortune for some poor adolescent in the Honduras to make it. I'm going to start simple - I have a thing for aprons, and aprons are going to be my starter project.
ANYWAY - back to the thrift store. Morgan and I found the most awesome pillowcase. It has yellow daisies on it. I'm in love with it because it looks like bed linens my grandmother used to have back in the seventies. It will make a great apron! We also found another bed sheet, that will make an apron, or a skirt, and possibly some pillows. Morgan found a sheet and pillow case for her room, which she plans on decorating in - hippie-frog style. She could do a much better job than I can explaining what that means.
Goodwill has a TON of books, and they're so inexpensive. Paperbacks are 49 cents and hardcovers are 99 cents. We grabbed a bunch - we even found a Choose Your Own Adventure book! In the housewares section, I found a set of dishes I had to have. I've been really tired of the ones I have, and was happy to find some new/old ones. We found a couple of other things, but the best was Morgan's hat. I'll post the picture once I manage to pull it off my cell phone. It's so her!
After our Goodwill shopping excursion, we stopped at Sonic for slushies, then went home to show off our finds. My sister-in-law hadn't had enough partying for one day, so we ended up going out again to Tijuana Flats, where I opted for a Corona Light and a Tijuana Trio - chips with a sampling of their queso, guacamole, and salsa.
This was my Saturday. The best part of it ALL was spending time with Morgan. She's so much fun to hang out with, and we don't do it nearly enough. I'm also convinced that I never need to shop in a retail store again for anything. I will, but I want to limit it to things that are really unique, or worth the money. Now all I need to do is figure out how to sew.
